Filtering Notion Relational Properties: Create Focused Database Views (2024)

Filters
January 1, 2024

Filtering views in Notion is a great way to show only the information you want to see in your databases. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to create a filter that uses "relational" properties to filter a view. "Relational" properties are a powerful way to link databases in Notion, and creating filtered relational views lets you do useful things like only view tasks from a given project. Let's dive in!

What Are Relational Properties?

Before we dive into creating a filter, let's take a moment to understand what "relational" properties are in Notion. Relational properties are properties that link to other pages or databases in Notion. For example, you might have a "team members" database, and each entry in that database could have a "relational" property that links to the "projects" that team member is involved with.

Relational properties are one of the most powerful features of Notion databases--but if you're here reading this, I'll assume you've already created your relation and are ready to start filtering!

How To Create A Relational Property Filter

Now that we understand what "relational" properties are, let's create a filter that uses one to filter a view. Here's how to do it:

  1. Navigate to the database where you want to create the filter.
  2. Duplicate the view that you want to filter, and give it a new name (such as "Team Members").
  3. Click on the filter button in the top-right corner of the view.
  4. Select the "relational" property you want to filter by (in this case, "Team Member").
  5. Choose the value you want to filter for (in this case, "John Doe").
  6. This will show only the entries in the database that are linked to John Doe's profile page.

Customize Your Filter

Once you've created your filter, you can customize it by following these steps:

  1. Click on the filter button in the top-right corner of the view.
  2. Edit the "relational" property and value you're filtering for to show different information in the view. For example, you can change the filter to show entries linked to "Jane Doe's" profile page.
  3. You can also use the options at the bottom of the filter menu to further customize your filter, such as using "and" and "or" statements to filter by multiple properties at once.
