Notion Tags
January 1, 2024

Tags are a useful way to sort and categorize your pages and database items in Notion.

In this quick tutorial, we'll show you a couple of ways to tag your Notion database pages, and create your own custom colorful tags.

How To Create Tags In Notion

  1. Navigate to your target database (Note: You can only tag Notion database pages, so these tagged pages will need to live inside a database);
  2. Hit the '+' to add a new property column then choose 'Select' or 'Multi-select';
  3. Create your tags directly by 'Adding an option'. At this stage, you can also select the color of your tag;
  4. Alternatively, you can simply click into any Select or Multi-Select property cell and start typing. Hit 'Enter' to create the new tag;
  5. Click into your tags cell and select your desired tags!
  6. Bonus: You can also drag from the corner of the cell down into other cells to copy your tags quickly.

Step 1: Navigate to your target database

To create tags in Notion, you'll need to navigate to your target database. Note that you can only tag database pages, so your tagged pages will need to live inside a database.

Step 2: Add a new property column

Once you're in your target database, you'll need to add a new property column to store your tags. This can be done by clicking on the '+' button in the top-right corner of the database view.

This will open a list of all the property types available in Notion. From this list, select 'Select' or 'Multi-select'. These property types allow you to create tags that can be applied to your database pages.

Step 3: Create your tags

To create your tags, you'll need to add them to the new property column you just created. There are two ways to do this:

  • Add tags directly: To add tags directly, click on the 'Add an option' section in the property menu. This will open a new field where you can enter the name of your tag. Repeat this step for each tag you want to create.
  • Create tags on the fly: Alternatively, you can simply click into any Select or Multi-Select property cell and start typing. Hit 'Enter' to create the new tag.

Step 4: Apply your tags to your database pages

Once you've created your tags, you can apply them to your database pages by clicking into the tags cell and selecting the desired tags.

To apply a tag to a database page, simply click on the tags cell for that page, and then select the appropriate tag from the drop-down menu. Repeat this step for each item or database page you want to tag.

Step 5 (optional): Use the drag cells feature to copy tags

As a bonus, you can also use the drag cells feature to quickly copy your tags into other cells. Simply click and hold on the corner of the cell, and then drag down into the other cells where you want to copy the tags.

This can be a useful shortcut if you want to apply the same set of tags to multiple database pages.

And that's it! You've successfully created and applied tags in Notion. This feature allows you to add an extra layer of organization and grouping to your database pages, making it easier to find and sort your information.

Example uses

Now that you know how to create and apply tags in Notion, you might be wondering how you can use this feature in your own workflow. Here are a few examples to help get you started:

  • Use tags to group related items in your database. For example, you could create tags for 'Projects', 'Customers', and 'Team Members'. Then, you could apply the appropriate tags to each item in your database, making it easy to see which items are related to each other.
  • Use tags to track the status of items in your database. For example, you could create tags for 'In Progress', 'Completed', and 'On Hold'. Then, you could apply these tags to your database items to track their status and progress.
  • Use tags to filter and sort your database. Once you've applied tags to your database items, you can use the filtering and sorting features in Notion to quickly find and organize your information. For example, you could use the 'Filter' option to only show items that have a certain tag, or you could use the 'Sort' option to group items by their tags.
