List Of Industries: For B2B Segmenting And Related Dropdowns (NAICS)

List Of Industries
Industries

The 2022 NAICS official structure document lists 2144 distinct industry codes; that's a bit dense to navigate through though (who knew there were so many industries dedicated to various grain farming!).

Instead of having you wade through that spreadsheet, I've transferred the high level categories into a Notion database with the 96 official industry categories from the NAICS.

Why, you might ask?

Two reasons.

1. List of industries for dropdown selection

One use case is precisely the one I found myself in when creating this database. I wanted to create a dropdown list of industries for Notion-run businesses to choose from--so that they can be specific about the target segments they want to go after if they offer any B2B services or products.

I found myself referencing a bunch of secondary source content, when I figured I might as well go to the official source: the NAICS official structure document. Once I found the densely packed excel spreadsheet, translating this into Notion seemed like a useful exercise (which may or may not prove to be true...!).

But there's one more reason I've added this component to the library.

2. Building robust infrastructure for indie businesses

My main mission with Landmark Labs is to improve the infrastructure for online and indie business building. Within that, there are several fundamentals that I'll be adding more resources toward in the coming months and years (from revenue models to acquisition channels).

Business industries is certainly one such fundamental. Whether that's better understanding your customer segments, or simply reminding yourself of the sheer scope of productive activity that powers our modern world--this document seemed like info more people should have ready access to.

The thing is: now that we have this official list in Notion, we can reference it wherever we like going forward. And the truth is, I don't know where, when or if it will be all that useful--but part of what I'd like to do here is translate as many useful bits of information over into a common language (Notion) so that building an online business is easier, and more grounded, than ever.
